I don’t know about you, but I love reading Kevin Henkes books to my students. The kids really seem to connect to the characters and their thinking really grows with the books. These books can be used for all kinds of reading skills and strategies: making connections, character analysis, comparing and contrasting, adjectives, descriptive writing, and (one of my faves) author’s message.
I really enjoyed watching my students discuss and give reasons for their thinking. They totally impressed me!
Here is an anchor chart that we worked on a little at a time after reading each book. They came up with each message all on their own. It’s moments like that that totally make being a teacher one of the best jobs in the world!
