BUILD Math Stations: First Week

First Grade Classroom: BUILD Math Stations
We started doing our BUILD math stations this week and the kids just love it. (To find out more about BUILD math stations, click here.) On Tuesday, the first thing I introduced was the I basket because that’s where they are just doing independent reading with math books. I also introduced the U basket as one of the first ones because for U they are using manipulatives, and most of my kiddos had used manipulatives in Kinder and we also practiced using them appropriately last week.

On Wednesday we started B {Buddy Games} and I showed the class the game we would be playing: “What Ya Hiding?” (from my math games pack). The kids LOVED playing this game. You would have though I told them that this was free choice time!
In case you are unfamiliar with 1st grade, “What Ya Hiding?” helps the students with their number combinations. I really want to drill the combos of 5 into them because on our BOY math assessment, that is one of the tasks.
Here are a couple of my girls playing “What Ya Hiding?”

Last year for U {Using Manipulatives} I just let my kids play with the blocks and things. I never liked that they didn’t have any sort of accountability, but I also never knew how to fix it. Play is good, I want them to have a goal when working. I believe it also helps cut down on misbehavior with the materials.
This summer I thought I should make some manipulative task cards!
I wanted to wait to see how my kids did with them before posting them to TpT and I’m so excited to say that they did an awesome job! :)

This little girl is working on the ten frames with counters. She fills in the ten frame with some counters and then writes a number sentence to go with it.

These girls are using base 10 blocks. There is a card with a number on it, and they build the number. Then, they can turn the card over to see a picture of how the base 10 blocks should look. Gotta love self- checking activities! :)

This precious boy is using pattern blocks to make a pattern. First, he copies the pattern that is on the card, then he makes his own pattern using similar rules (AB, ABC, AAB, etc.)
You can get my Manipulative task cards here.

About 45 pages of fun tasks for your students to work on in math centers/stations/BUILD!
Here is our chart for what we’ve learned so far in BUILD. The L and D are covered because I have not introduced those yet.
