These are seriously my new favorite books! I had NEVER heard of Elmer the Elephant until a couple weeks ago when my teammate brought her son’s books up. I fell in love! So I made this Elmer Math & Literacy unit. I think the Elmer books are a great way to teach many different skills- Text Connections, Adjectives, Character Analysis, Colors… it goes on and on!
So, I decided to throw it all together in my newest unit:

Here are my kiddos working on the math craftivity. This can be done using different colors of tissue paper OR you can just have them color with crayons. I put the key on the projector and they rolled & added 2 dice together to determine the colors. I also told them beforehand that they could not put 2 of the same color next to each other.
Here is the Elmer color-by-sight-word that we did to practice those very necessary sight words for fluency! They used the color code on the side to color in the squares on Elmer.
What makes me unique? Thinking Map & Writing Paper
My students LOVED this part! They really enjoyed thinking about things that made them unique AND about what made their friends unique. This was a great community building activity.
More thinking maps… I did these whole group because I ran out of time. These 2 pages are great for getting students to work on their descriptive writing! After we did these, my students wrote their own stories about Elmer and used the words from our thinking maps.
