Character Education for the Classroom

First Grade Classroom: Character Education Posters

One of my favorite things is teaching my kiddos all about character education and what it looks like to be a good person. I try my best to model for them how I’d like them to act. It would be totally normal for you to hear me call my students ‘Sir’ and ‘Ma’am’ throughout the day. I apologize to them when I make a mistake. I purposely leave my kids alone for a minute or 2 just so I can talk about integrity when I return.

I want to make sure that I am doing my part to teach my students how to behave and what it looks like to have good character. We practice a lot of “What if?” scenarios and these posters good visuals to remind them how they should act.

I think it’s important for us to not only teach the academics, but social behavior as well. There is a lot of negativity in this world and I’d like to teach my students that we should still care about, help, and love each other (and ourselves!)

  1. I also try to use "good manners" with my students. We discuss what respect is and I have the students model it. We show examples of "good" manners as well as examples of "bad" manners. I have a booklet of our class rules and after we discuss each rule, each student draws a picture of him/herself exhibiting that rule. This I hope helps the student to visualize him/herself in a positive way.
